The Biodiversity and Marine Biotechnologies core facility "Bio2Mar", is a regional platform labelled GEPETO (Grand équipement pour l'évolution technologique et l'ouverture scientifique) by the region Occitanie Pyrénées Méditerranée.

This core facility created in 2010 offers to public and private sector researchers expertise and state-of-the-art technology in research on marine biodiversity and blue biotechnologies with a strategic position on the Mediterranean coast.

Bio2Mar is unique in offering a complete development chain from isolation of marine organisms, their identification, biomass production, and purification and structural characterization of biomolecules of interest. The core facility is based on multidisciplinary and interdependent expertise in microbiology, molecular biology and chemistry allowing valorization of marine biodiversity with in particular the valorisation of the chemical diversity resulting from this biodiversity.

These multidisciplinary approaches allow us to intervene in several areas of development for human health and well-being, and the environment. Beyond this blue biotechnology development vocation, the core facility's equipment and expertise can also contribute to research activities in various fields such as environmental quality, aquaculture, microbial ecology and chemical ecology.

OOB Bio2Mar multidisciplinary approaches and multiple fields

The services offered by this core facility to the public research community and private companies include the provision of instruments, a full range of services, collaborative R&D activities, training and access to state-of-the-art expertise.

Bio2Mar has obtained a pre-labelling from the Infrastructure in Biology, Health and Agronomy (GIS IBISA) during the 2019 labelling campaign.

Bio2Mar develops its quality approach according to the NFX50-900 standard and is part of the regional network Quality Research in Occitania "QROc".

Bio2Mar has a team of 8 people with complementary skills and techniques spread over 4 specialised technical facilities located on 2 geographical sites.

The Research Federation at the Oceanological Observatory of Banyuls hosts three of the four technical facilities :

  • Biodiversity and Molecular Biology Facility
  • Microbiology and Culture Facility
  • Biomolecules and Environmental Chemistry Facility.

The Centre for Island Research and Environmental Observatory at the University of Perpignan (UPVD-CRIOBE) host The “Secondary Metabolites, Xenobiotics and Environmental Metabolomics” technical facility.
