Augmented Environmental Observation Through e-DNA

Context, challenge and solutions

Prototype ePlatform

Coping with two biggest environmental challenges: climate change and biodiversity loss and yet contributing to a sustainable blue growth requires innovative solutions and multidisciplinary efforts.

The assessment of environmental risks related to the presence of waterborne pathogens or to the biodiversity loss in aquatic environments by efficient and rapid tools has become essential so that producers, managers, control authorities can take preventive actions with regard to the use of water resources.

In this context, we develop low-cost performant instruments for high-frequency in-situ survey of biodiversity/specific targets (markers).

e-Platform: from sampling to data

The whole system is composed by two instruments which can be used independently: an autonomous e-DNA sampler and a micro-fluidic genosensor for target species/biomarkers detection via a unique DNA signature.

The eDNA sampler is Able to perform multiple functions: sample, concentrate and pre-extract eDNA/eRNA in situ and autonomously. Designed prototype was challenged in both laboratory and field demonstrations assays for the detection of marine microorganisms: bacteria and virus as well as for the evaluation of total bacterial diversity in natural waters through eDNA metabarcoding. Patent pending (PCT/FR2024/000035).

The µ-Sensor uses an automated molecular method to detect specific micro-organisms. Method was validated and calibrated on waterborne pathogens: Vibrio sp., E. coli and Microcystis sp. (toxic cyanobacteria). Patent pending (PCT/FR2024/000084).
