Marine stations are renewed to offer training in various aspects of marine biology during the Summer period. These trainings are part of undergraduate and graduate SU programs, and are generally easily accessible to students not from Sorbonne Université as isolated courses.

Mediterranean Ecology

OOB Ecomed students mar

Naming the organisms is crucial to survey biodiversity and identify biodiversity hotspots. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the diversity of Mediterranean marine and terrestrial habitats. This course aims at providing the necessary tools to start studies involving taxonomy of marine organisms such as zooplankton, ichtyo-, macro-fauna as well as phytoplankton and macro-algae. The course relies on lectures, field sampling and laboratory work. It offers the opportunity to learn taxonomy, observe taxa in natural habitat and get an insight into their biology. In ecology, the different habitats are discussed: pelagic and benthic, sandy, muddy and rocky bottoms, the coralligenous, the Posidonia meadow for the marine part, the lagoon habitat for the "land-sea transition” as well as the “maquis” and the forest habitat for the terrestrial environment.

Exploring the marine microbiome: practical approaches

OOB stage MicroWorlds

Major recent oceanographic campaigns like Tara Oceans have popularized the concept of the marine microbiome, which is made up of highly diverse microorganisms and its study is at the crossroads of important ecological and socio-economic issues. Marine environment research labs now have increasingly powerful techniques for collecting, characterizing, and experimenting on these microbial populations. During this summer school, we offer students a hands-on approach to this field, based on practical training in the necessary tools and on mini-experimental projects. 4 different projects are offered to students: marine snow study project, marine plankton diversity project, marine biofilms importance project, and a microbial ecotoxicology project.
