ASSEMBLE : Association of European Marine Biological Laboratories

ASSEMBLE is an infrastructure integration project funded under the Framework Programme 7. It enables European scientists access to an infrastructure network across seven sites in Europe (Sweden, France, UK, Portugal, Italy), as well as one in Israel and one in Chile. ASSEMBLE uses the most modern approaches for the in depth study of the biology of model organisms and marine ecosystems.

Coordinated by Sven Loven of the Centre for Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, the consortium includes eight major players in  marine biology research. The Oceanographic Observatory in Banyuls sur Mer and the Station Biologique de Roscoff represent the stations of CNRS-UPMC.

The participating marine stations joined forces to improve, coordinate and promote access to their sites, resources, services and platforms. Although this project will end in 2013, ASSEMBLE wants to create a pilot program of European research infrastructure and EMBRC for the development of a scientific home on the site of the station.

The project is divided into three sections:

  • The joint research activities (Joint Research Activities - JRA) to improve farming methods, conservation and study of marine models (living organisms, eukaryotic cells, genetic resources)
  • Activities networking and interoperability (Networking activities - NA): working sessions with the objective of creating common tools and a database on marine models.
  • The transnational access to services and resources (TA) provides access to marine models on site or via remote access to research facilities and service stations (laboratories, boats, technical platforms, ...) on projects selected by an international committee.
