The unique environment of the Arago laboratory is protected by the initiative and collaborative work of our scientific community. From these dedicaced efforts, the forest reserve of Massane was created in 1973 and the Cerbere-Banyuls marine reserve followed in 1974. Together they form the first nature reserve in France.
This protection was strengthened in 2011 by the extension of the marine park to the Lacaze-Duthiers canyon. A perfect environment for biodiversity observation and experimentation this exceptionally biologically diverse marine region is characterized by a relatively short shelf, a slope, and the presence of deep canyons (> 1000m) including the canyon Lacaze-Duthiers.
The Oceanographic Observatory has three fixed monitoring stations located at varying distances from the coast to the canyons that are regularly monitored for physical, chemical and biological parameters, some of them are acquired in real time. These data are stored in databases accessible on the website of the observatory.
